Virginia-West Virginia-Kentucky

You can imagine that some days on a cross-continent-driving-holiday are about driving.

Today is one of those days - blasting along the highways, enjoying the picturesque scenery. We're headed for Lexington, Kentucky, and The Bourbon Trail.

The foliage is a pretty mix of yellows, greens, reds and orange against a backdrop of mountain ranges, as we head west on I-64.

The farm where Cyrus McCormick invented the mechanical reaper.

We saw farms with attractive barns, cows, (massive, belching) factories, and quaint looking towns. We stopped at huge roadside service centers for fuel, which is cheaper out here than in New York. We saw the State Troopers sitting along the highways in a variety of cool cars.

It was a lovely drive on beautiful smooth, gently winding roads, the autumn colours ever present.

We arrived into Lexington, Kentucky, at peak hour, and chose to try the Hilton for accommodation.

Nice room, $14 valet parking (vs $45 in Washington!), and right in town. I very much like parking the car and then walking to bars and dinner.

There was a festival (for Thursday?) with bands and bars, spilled onto the streets. We had a beer there and watched the crowd, then enjoyed a tasty dinner at a sidewalk table at '310'.
