Day Four - NYC to Washington DC

We woke a little earlier this morning to embark on our road trip.

We'd booked a town car to take us to Newark Airport, where we'd arranged to collect our hire car. The traffic was substantial but no where near as bad as yesterday, with roads closed for works and parades, and we were at Newark in 40 minutes.

We'd booked a standard SUV through Dollar, which should have given us a Jeep Grand Cherokee or similar. We've now booked this car type 4 times in the States and have never been offered one! They love upselling hire cars here - this time we had a very uncomfortable looking Nissan or a Honda to choose from, so we took the upgrade to a Ford Expedition.

On the road with our trusty Garmin GPS, and we were off to Washington.

The road passed through the Garden State of New Jersey via the Lincoln tunnel, into Delaware, passed Baltimore in Maryland and finally into Washington, D.C. The traffic was fine until about 40 miles from Washington where the I-295 slowed to a bumper crawl.

Once we passed over the 495, the traffic eased and we enjoyed the drive along a pretty, manicured parkway into town.

We saw several Ospreys, and idyllic farms and lush forrests, with the leaves just starting to turn the colours of Autumn.

View from the hotel's rooftop bar! So happy to be here.
