Austin is the 'music capital of the world', and somewhere Dom has wanted to visit for awhile. From home we checked out who was playing on the night that we'd be in town, listened to them on iTunes, and bought tickets ($5 and $20 each for two bands!). They even sent the tickets to me in Australia!
The road from Houston to Austin has to be one of the most pleasant of the trip so far. Lush, grassy countryside with healthy looking cattle and great roads, big blue sky and fast speed limits.
I'd really like to applaud the Texan road engineer - incredible spaghetti junction stuff going on with their highway intersections.
Like yesterday, we arrived at peak hour to choked roads and a couple of accidents. Which brings me to my number one requirement for happy travels: Patience!
Into our pre-booked Sheraton, two blocks from Stubbs.
Dinner was a 30 minute wait at the bar for a table and the best bar-b-q I have ever had. Amazing meats, soft and tasty. The best coleslaw ever. The best beans. All with the live music beating through the walls and tables from outside! It was incredibly busy, but the staff were excellent, and had it well under control.
Outside into the Texan night in Stubbs back yard, where in a sound shell, Texan Sarah Jaffe was playing, beats so raw they went through my chest. She was amazing, and just the warm up for the Old 97's! There were around 1500 people standing, listening, with old beer sheds all around the fence.
