We tried making coffee in the room this morning, but it was awful. So funny that good coffee is hard to come by in America.
We walked west along 42nd Street which took us past Times Square and into Hells Kitchen, where we found some breakfast at a funky local market.
Right across the road was the USS Intrepid, an aircraft carrier that retired from active duty in 1974, now berthed in the Hudson River as a museum. It houses the Space Shuttle 'Enterprise', one of the concordes, and many helicopters and jets, as well as interactive displays and simulators.
It's a huge ship and good fun clambering through the superstructure to the bridges, seeing how the crew lived.
We saw an SR-71, Tomcat, Phantom, AV8B (Harrier), Corsair, Kfir (Israeli Mirage), Mig 17 & Mig 21, F16 and lots more.
From the ship we also had a great view of Manhattan and New Jersey. There were helicopters cruising the river on tours.
We caught a cab down to Century 21, where we had a quick look and then left the craziness to the truly avid shoppers. Into the subway and uptown to 57th Street and the southern entrance to Central Park. The park was well populated on a beautiful Sunday, by people walking, biking, playing, napping, chatting and even sunbathing. The park staff are already setting up the ice skating rinks for Winter.
For dinner we met Claire, Dom's relative, down in the East Village at Gemma, an Italian restaurant. It was a lovely evening, continued at a bar further up Bowery at B Bar, a garden styled bar with an open fireplace.
A cab took us half way home to the Red Ball Garage on 31st Street, which was the starting point for the Cannonball Run. From there we walked, enjoying the cool evening, seeing normal New York.
