It was a bright blue sunny morning, and warm. We packed up and headed for the International UFO Museum downtown where we paid our $5 and goofed around with the aliens. There weren't many artifacts on display (ha ha) but interesting articles to read. It's no wonder there are so many conspiracy theories when the government apparently tried to tell people that the sightings weren't till ten years later, despite news articles dated otherwise. Odd.
We bought fruit for breakfast and drove east on the 380, past wide open fields.
Approaching the Texan border the weather closed in, bringing low cloud and showers. The earth started to look richer and we saw lush green crops as well as many more cattle.
Texas is our 4th state in 4 days. It has a higher speed limit. Nodding donkeys are more prevalent.
We stopped at Sonic for lunch and tried their cheeseburgers. Not bad, but no Five Guys. There's no 'inside' to Sonic - most people pull up, order at a billboard, the waitress brings the food out, and they drive off. We ate there, but still ordered and paid at a billboard. Strange.
I'd made a booking for tonight before leaving Roswell as we had another long drive ahead. As we drove through the afternoon the weather cleared up and we enjoyed the hurt-your-eyes green of the Texan roadside after driving through the desert. There are wildflowers in bloom everywhere!
We saw lots of wind farms, a few deserted towns, some in such poor disrepair that we wonder if they'd been taken out in a tornado.
We saw a driver lose control of his vehicle (at 130 kmh) and drive into the median ditch between us. They were either very skilled or very lucky as they maneuvered the car and kept going.
From the highway it's not obvious where they're growing all the famous Texan steaks. I had expected to see cattle everywhere. The closer we get to Dallas there are more frequent artistic ranch gates, with roads leading in to the bush, so perhaps they're just kept away from the road.
We're now half way across the country, and over half way on our journey to Miami! 900 km yesterday, 800 today! We'll stay for two nights here to have a rest and a look around. We have to check out the grassy knoll, right?
