We had a much smoother exit from Australia and entry into the US with our e-passports, minimal delays all around.
If I had told you ten years ago that I wanted to go to America to drink beer and eat burgers you would have had me committed!! It's a very different story now. Delicious, well made burgers and great craft breweries in all kinds of out of the way places.
I can recommend Granite mountain in Prescott, Arizona , Ellem of Dallas, Cigar city in Tampa and many others.
We have also found that it suits us to get the biggest vehicle we can. You see more from an SUV, and they are safer, more comfortable and have all the space you need for camping, bikes, and any purchases you may make. Also, if traveling with children they can be kept at arms length from each other.
Fuel consumption is not really a problem at about 60c a litre. A lot of them have 4WD which is handy when it snows!
When planning the trip try to use US or state highways where possible. They are a little slower but you see more and the traffic is considerably less manic. You also get access to local food, much better than the generic interstate fast food.
If you are a fan of espresso coffee, Australian style, you will be mostly out of luck. Once you are away from the west coast or major centres the only espresso is from Starbucks. I will say no more.
A couple of things of note for this trip compared to previous. The country is much greener than in the past few years - El Niño at work! Fuel is the cheapest this decade but the exchange rate is not what it was three years ago.
That's about it from me. Make sure you talk to the locals as they know where all the good things are and they are incredibly helpful and friendly. Eat and drink what you like but have an exercise plan!! Don't bother bringing duty free booze into the US, it's all cheaper here.
