When we'd gone to bed, snow had been predicted but it was still a warm 15 degrees. We woke this morning to a thick covering of snow. It was beautiful.
We were on the road by 6am. We'd intended to head south east through Independence Pass to Colorado Springs, but the pass was still closed from Winter.
Heading back to the freeway, I was glad not to be on windy mountain roads. The snow fell all day, and was particularly bad through Loveland Pass at 11990 feet.
We stopped in Vail for a quick look around, but it was even more closed up than Aspen. Another very pretty town that would be great fun in season.
It's so strange to have been driving along in 40 degrees under brilliant blue skies to now be in zero degrees or less, in a complete white out.
Past Denver the weather and traffic eased a little, and we could tell that the mountains had given way to fields, but the vision was limited to about a kilometer.
Snow plows were out in force today, and flat bed tow trucks as well, collecting the unfortunate victims of snow and ice. We're very happy with our choice of vehicle after today's difficult conditions.
