Jackson and the Grand Tetons

Being a fan of Ansel Adams' photography style and subjects from an early age, I was very excited to see the Grand Tetons range and Snake River first hand.

We decided to hire bikes again, but drove to the visitor Centre at Moose, about 12 miles out of town, to start our ride. Many of the bike paths had only just opened after the winter today, including the path out to Jenny Lake.

The bike hire place was pretty impressive. We could have hired full carbon road bikes or even carbon full suspension mountain bikes. We went with flat bar road bikes, easy to ride and good view of the scenery.

We were lucky with the weather - it was a spectacular blue day, warm in the sun. We set off on a long slow climb up to the lake, riding alongside the majestic Teton range. These are very young mountains. Something I'd forgotten to mention til now - the highways from Kansas City onwards all have huge gates to close them and signs directing you return to the previous town. Serious weather!

We had already purchased our park pass at the visitor centre - $80 for a year, allowing both of us (or how ever many people are legally in the car) into any national park. The park is beautifully kept, with separate bike/walking path from the car traffic.

The altitude made the ride a little tougher than it would otherwise have been. There was still quite a bit of snow on the path. We saw deer but no other wildlife.

On arrival at Jenny Lake we were surprised to see it still mostly covered in ice! Not something we see often in Australia. It was a beautiful sight and well worth the trip. Riding back was fabulous - all downhill. Dom elected to ride back to town on the bike path, purpose built beside the main road. It was well travelled being a sunny Sunday afternoon.

We really enjoyed our stay in Jackson - so many parallels to Aspen and Queenstown, NZ. Great hotels, hip shops, cool bars and restaurants, all overlooked by stunning mountains.
